how to join: procedure
SOIL acts as a liaison between the farmer and the apprentice. Typically, apprenticeships take place between May and September, although many farms need help all year round. We endeavor to match the apprentice with the farm according to the information given by both parties.
If you are interested in doing an apprenticeship:
- Review the farms offering programs.
- Complete the apprentice application. Submit the application to SOIL online and send in your application fee (CAN $30). Contact SOIL if you would prefer to complete a paper application. Be sure to indicate which farms you are interested in on your application.
- SOIL will send you a complete description of the farms in which you expressed interest. Use this information to make direct contact with the farm where you wish to do your apprenticeship.
If you are a farmer interested in having apprentices:
- Complete and submit the farmer application. Contact SOIL if you prefer to complete a paper application.
- If you would like to include a photo of your farm on this website, send a photo of your farm by mail or email.
- Send in your application fee (CAN $30) . Contact SOIL if you prefer to complete a paper application. Indicate if you would like to receive the application information of applicants who have expressed interest in your farm.

It is the responsibility of both parties to come to a working agreement. Both parties should discuss such topics as length of commitment, hours of work, learning outcomes expected, housing and food arrangements, holidays, sick days, insurance, and other special needs.
